Smart Watch

what is a smart watch?

Smart watches are like your mobile phones, similar to your smartphones. Their mobile devices or miniature electronic devices that you wear on your body. They’re also called body-borne computers or wearables consisting of a computer and display that are attached to a bracelet.

They were not always as sophisticated as they are today. Earlier models only performed basic stuff, like calculations, telling time digitally, game play, and even language translation. Well, I guess they had some sophistication, didn’t they.

Believe it or not, the first smart watch was a digital watch that came out in 1972 called the Pulsar made by the Hamilton Watch Company which would eventually be bought by Seiko.

It wasn’t until 1982 that the Pulsar would become the first watch with user programmable memory. While other companies were focusing on releasing personal computers to the public in the 1980s, Seiko was developing computers in watches. A perfect example was the Data 2000 sold in 1983 which came with an external keyboard for data entry.

Another Company that was cashing in on these watches was Casio. Some of it’s most successful sellers were the Casio Data Bank and Nelsonic Game Watches.

In 2010 smartwatches began to include features like portable media players with FM radio that could playback digital audio and video on Bluetooth or a USB headset. Most of these watches have an EVD screen (an electronic visual display: either an LCD, OLED, or Hologram) to present the images, text, or video to you. These EVDs are known to be used in television sets, computer monitors, and digital signage (for example: outdoor advertising signs), but are very much used in mobile computing like tablets, smartphones, and information appliances.

Communication With External Device features

They have the capability to communicate, depending on the watch and it’s use, with sensors, wireless headsets, or heads-up displays. Since they are computers, they can retrieve data from internal or external sensors. They can also be used to control other instruments or computers.

supported technologies

Smart watches support technologies like Bluetooth as mentioned earlier, WIFI, and GPS. But many times they are used as a remote system for smartphones.

Operating Systems, iOS, OS

The operating systems include Android, AsteroidOS, SailfishOS, WatchOS (Apple), Tizen, and Ubuntu Touch.

what is the best smartwatch?

It all depends on what you’re looking for in a smartwatch as they all have different features, and come in a range of sizes and colors.

The best smartwatch brand in the world right now though is without a doubt Fitbit. The reason for that is pretty simple when you can top Apple. This brand has and is mainly focused on the health & fitness industry, combined with a long battery life and detailed sleep tracking, this smartwatch company is making headlines.

The company is leading the industry in smartwatch design and creates products like sweatproof wireless headsets, WIFI Smart Scales, Heart Rate Rate Wristbands,  accessories, and even performance clothing.

This is a list of the best smartwatches you can buy listed in order from left to right:

  • 6. Huawei Watch 2
  • 7. Garmin Fenix 5
  • 8. Garmin Vivoactive 3
  • 9. Fossil Q Gen 2

new smartwatches

Whether you’re  looking for new smartwatches or just trying to find the best smart watch to buy, there’s really not been major changes to what’s still on top.

What is the best best fitness smartwatch?

Fitbit as mentioned earlier is a monster of a brand that’s even beating brands like Apple in the wearables market and continues to get only stronger. It’s Ionic watch is compatible with the Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.  The watch’s OS is proprietary and the processor is also unknown, some well guarded secrets to their success.

The display size is 1.2 by 0.85 by 10.2 inches and uses an LCD instead of the OLED and variations of other company brands. Like the Apple S3 watch the fitness features come with an accelerator, HR Monitor, and GPS.

Now probably one of the best features on this Ionic watch is its ability to last 4 days and 10 hours with GPS. Although, there is no phone call feature for this wach. It’s really not built for that, as the focus is more on fitness than phone calls.

It’s one of the lightest watches weighing in at 1 oz, a great benefit when doing fitness.

5 top smartwatches Companies

According to the IDC, these are the top companies leading the way and it’s no surprise why.

Best Smartwatch For iPhone?

The best smart watch for the iPhone right now is the Apple Watch Series 3 as Apple continues to do well with its new series. Apple did not make drastic changes to its smartwatch except for two major changes added which are an increase in focus on fitness and a built-in cellular so that there is no need to have your iPhone with you if you prefer not to. Yes, you can now make calls without using your iPhone, but it is still of course compatible with the iOS.

The watch runs on the new and faster Apple S3 processor. The display size has not changed and is still 1.65 inches using the OLED. It’s however slightly heavier than the S1 by 0.1 oz.

As far as the other features that have improved in the Apple S3, its got improved HR monitoring, clearer calling, a new band, and case options but there’s plenty of accessories on the market if you’re not satisfied with Apple’s. The other fitness features included is the accelerometer which was already available in the previous series and a new GPS.

The bad part about the new series is it’s not cheap but that’s Apple and it’s nothing new. The other thing is a bad experience in battery life, the LTE feature drains your battery pretty fast at an estimated 18 hours and 5 with GPS.
